Great DurgaGREAT DURGA

Inspired by a sample from Sambor Prei Kuk - Kompong Thom, (early VIIth century), National Museum of Phnom Penh.

Durga in Sanskrit means the “unapproachable”, and is Goddess of the Universe and one of the forms of Devi, the ultimate Goddess. She is also one of the appearances of the wife of the ‘god’ Shiva. When she is fighting the buffalo demon, Mahisa, she carries all the power of the different gods of the Brahmanic Pantheon, and in particular the symbols of Shiva and Vishnu.

The grace of the sway of her body, the sculpting of the pleat of her cloth and the generosity of her form are stylistic distinctions inherited from Indian art.

These features characterize this model and broadly the pre Angkorian period, between the VIth and IXth century. All these distinctions on one model make it one of the jewels of Khmer art.
