HAUTE RELIEF BAYONInspired by the towers of ‘Bayon Faces’, of the Bayon Temple in Angkor, The Kingdom of Kampuchea. Bayon Temple built (Angkor period late XIIth early XIIIth century) still stands. Bayon is one of the few Buddhist temples, as most built during the Angkor period were dedicated to Hindu deities. The ‘sanctuaries towers’ of the Bayon Temple, are topped by human faces orientated according to the cardinal points. Over 200 large faces adorn the 54 towers. The amount of faces equals the number of Provinces of the Ancient Kingdom of Angkor. These towers or chapels located on the median axis & on the angle pavilions remain shrouded in mystery. Do they represent the king, reigning on all the provinces, or are they a unique representation of Avalokitsvara, the divinity who ‘identified’ himself to the king? The Temples of Angkor, built by the Khmer Civilization between 802 & 1220 AD, represent one of humankind’s most astonishing & enduring, architectural achievements. From Angkor, the Khmer Kings ruled over a vast domain that reached from Vietnam to China, to The Bay of Bengal.
